This work was a response to the idea of portraiture, how a portrait created is a projection of the artists own brain. The way in which a mentally ill artist perceives their subject, and in turn themselves, can often be seen in the work itself. I thought a lot about how my own mental illnesses affect the way i see my subject and the processes and choices i make whilst creating. During this work i was experimenting with different printmaking methods and the final combination is a mixture of printmaking and other analog media. Each individual tile features a different piece of the brain (identity), with the central core tile shown as ‘diseased’ with the healthy core tile being outside of the brain.
