The Pogo Stick

This work was created as a part of my ongoing series, 'not suitable for children' (NSFC), a collection of childrens' toys and objects rendered in some way or another incapable of performing their intended function. A dysfunctional children’s pogo stick with a warped, hand- sculpted latex handlebar. Playful at first glance, the object quickly reveals itself as unsafe and unusable. This work distorts a symbol of childhood joy into a metaphor for emotional instability and inherited dysfunction. A study in conflict between surface playfulness and underlying threat.
